Moira Tauiliili: S M A R T

S M A R T.

For the longest time, I thought that being ‘smart’ meant a person that has a natural academic gift, a person who understood everything. For the longest time, being a ‘smart person’ was not what I thought myself as.

I still don’t. I am not smart. I am human. I work hard a lot and some days I’m lazy. Truth is I’m probably average but I strive to be better. Some days are good, some days are bad, but I pick myself up, dust myself off and give it another go.

I fail, I succeed – that’s life. I grind, I pray. I don’t go out because I’d rather read up on things I don’t understand the first time around. I look up words in the dictionary to extend my vocabulary. I ignore the people who talk about me rather than talk to me.

If I miss even a minute of what my lecturer says I feel like I’m weeks behind. I write, my grammar isn’t great, but I work at it, I edit things, I change sentences every day until I’m happy with a piece.

There’s no such thing as ‘one type’ of smart. We can all be smart if we put our minds to it, if we work hard or if we stay out of other people’s business.

It’s about what you can offer the world… and how much you’re willing to work at it.

Set a goal, change the heart of at least 3 people this year… it’s not about how long you’ve been on the journey it’s about where you’re headed and how hard you’re willing to work for it.

People will talk, that’s what they do. People might not even want you to succeed. SHOW THEM. Don’t work for their benefit but for yours – reap the results and what they say won’t even matter anymore.

Listen to constructive criticism and improve. NEVER STOP LEARNING.
